Just say NO

to Facebook, that is.  Follow these directions to opt-out of getting ads from companies who want to use Facebook as a giant electronic billboard.  Because these companies paid Facebook to advertise, all your default "advertise to me" settings are YES.  Here's how to say NO:

As of today, NEW PRIVACY setting called "Instant Personalization" shares data with non-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Enable." Go to Account>Privacy Settings>Applications and Websites>Instant Personalization>at bottom of page Edit Settings, and un-check "Enable".
